With a mission to foster the creation of new works for children’s choir, the Organization of American Kodály Educators (OAKE) offers the Ruth Boshkoff Composition Prize annually. After planning year after year to put my name in for this prize, I finally did so in 2020, and ended up winning. It is a special honor for me, not least because of my long-standing connections to Hungary and the Kodály world.
Each Boshkoff Prize winner is commissioned to write a new piece for premiere at the following year’s OAKE National Conference. My resulting piece is Redbirds, for children’s choir and piano. Since the 2021 conference is cancelled, this premiere will be delayed until the 2022 conference in Pittsburgh. Meanwhile, more info about the piece, including a perusal score, is available on my website.
