Welcome Home

from The Ghost of Wu

Following a tumultuous journey from her village to the Emperor’s court, Wu is met by gentle chorus of concubines welcoming her into the Emperor’s harem. During the course of the song, they transform her from a simple country girl into an elegant member of their circle.

Have a look at the score, if you’d like (pdf).

…and here are the lyrics.

Come and join us, little girl
In our airy chamber.
Welcome home.
Come and play with us
And let us comb
Your shiny hair.
Let us give you something beautiful to wear.

Come and tell us, little girl
Was it a pleasant journey?
Lucky child,
Come and rest with us
And share a mild
Cup of tea
Come and tell how your
Good fortune came to be.

What brave things did your father do?
Is your family ancient and noble?
Tell us of the fierce invaders he slew.
Is its reputation so global
That even the emperor knew,
and sent for you?

My clan is favored by rulers
Back to the Qin Dynasty.
Papa was loyal to Taizong
When allies were thin.
I was gift in return
For the emperor’s kindness toward my kin.
There is no worthier honor
Than to live in this dream
We’re living in.

Now you’re with us, little girl
Here among the priviledged.
Lucky thing,
It is every young girl’s dream
To serve the king.

(The CONCUBINES have finished dressing WU and are now leading her to the chamber of old TAIZONG, who can be seen waiting.)

We are lucky to be here in the Emperor’s care.
Welcome, little one.
Welcome to the Emperor’s lair.
Welcome home.
